Tips on Poem Writing

Have you been racking your brain to get to write your first poem? You sometimes wonder how the greatest poets manage to write those incredible words.

It isn’t so easy to put magical words together to capture the hearts of people but that doesn’t mean it is impossible to do either.

If Pablo Neruda can do it, so can you. Poets are artists and are very imaginative people. Unlike the visual artists that express themselves through their drawings and paintings, poets describe art with their words.

The good thing about poetry is that you can write about anything you want. There are no set rules which means you are free to write what you desire.

If you find yourself stuck during your first poem write up, here are some tips you should consider when writing your poem:

  1. Read lots of poetry:

If you want to be a good writer, you need to learn from others that have done it before. By reading other people’s poems it gives you an idea of how to construct your own poem.

  1. Meditate or listen to inspirational music:

You can listen to some music when writing your poem, it helps inspire you on the things to write about and also helps you to focus on your writing.

  1. Keep a notebook with you at all times

Inspiration can come to you at any time. It could be while you are on the road or on a bus. Whenever those words appear in your mind your notebook can come in handy.

  1. Capture a moment:

Just like the lens of the camera captures the vision of the photographer, so should your writing. Let events inspire you. Think of what message you want to pass to your readers so that when they read your words, they see what you see and feel what you feel. To get this focus on metaphors and the use of similes in your poem.

  1. Describe Anything.

You can write a poem describing a person or thing. Make people see that object in close perspective like they have never really looked that deep. The problem however with descriptive poems is that it may end up looking like lists.

  1. Use of Images:

Images bring a brighter and more idealistic meaning to your words. You can include good images to describe your poem and make it more engaging to readers.

  1. Write a funny poem

No one wants to sit down and read a whole history lesson. Poetry should be entertaining and fun. You should add humor to your poem to keep readers interested.

  1. Know your goal

Do not just keep writing a lot of words that will end up without meaning or a conclusion. Just like a movie, your poetry should have a plot, it should have an ending and a message you intend to pass.

If you are thinking about writing your poem, you should know that anyone can write a poem. Although it is rare to find a lot of poetry writers as a result of people’s interest in movies, there are still people that love to read poetry. You will be surprised about the number of people that still appreciate the use of language and are ready to listen to what you have to say.
